So I think I've been playing amnesiac Ryner enough to get the general gist of his character, but it helps to compare him to canon.
RYNER LUTE/FERUNA LIEUTOLU
First thing you have to know is that Ryner's life has pretty much sucked since birth. Also, he does not know his true name. It's not Ryner Lute. It's actually Feruna Lieutolu. "Ryner" probably comes from the demon inside him, Ryner Reed. This might explain why Ryner had so much difficulty coming up with something for himself. This plays out in Ryner's need to identify himself and come to care about himself through others. Ryner has almost no opinion of himself, outside of being a monster. He views himself solely through his relationships with others, particularly Sion and Ferris. They are his people.
Ryner is slightly obsessed with Sion. Sion saved his life when they were in military school together, Sion saved his life when he freed him from prison and Sion saved his life when he gave him something to believe in. Ryner loves Sion. No, not Ho-Yay but the type of love that doesn't even require physical intimacy to be powerful. Honestly, Ryner is kind of too lazy for ANY relationships; he's just... not interested. But Sion has been Ryner's motivating force for almost all his life since they met. And continues to be as the novels continue.
While Ferris is not a motivating force for Ryner, she is his link to humans and to emotions so she is equally important to him. She also tends to beat his ass when he goes into emo mode so that is good. This could actually end up a problem in Aather if Ryner hits one of these emo modes because it is very hard to break him out of it without smacking him around a bit or some other form of EXTREME distraction. In other words, feel free to kick his ass if he's moping for too long.
Another thing about Ryner is his odd relationship with hope. Deep down, Ryner wants to believe in people and he never truly loses his hope in people, even after his life is shattered many many times over. This is seen in how freely he can talk to other people about Sion's dream but yet reject it in front of him as fantasy. But Ryner's natural optimism has been shadowed by numerous losses, leading him to be cynical and largely disinterested in life (but still prone to the occasional joke and tease), his way of lessening the inevitable hurt. This is why his amnesiac self has a somewhat positive attitude and tries not to see the worst in people. This is Ryner's default state. He will slip more into his jaded self as memories return. Oh yeah, for some reason his cynical attitude also makes him a spaz. He shouts frequently when annoyed and is very good at bitching. His amnesiac self has a touch of this too because I think it is just Ryner's nature to bitch. Lol.
Then there is his pacifism. Despite being trained in the military and an expert at countless offensive spells, Ryner views fighting as bothersome and pointless. He has seen far too much death. He would rather sleep or just spend time with his people. He also has some authority issues. Basically, he doesn't show much respect toward authority, unless he feels like it. He has had TERRIBLE experience with knights and the military, which makes him instinctively guarded around them and much harder on them, should they screw up. However, Ryner will fight to protect. But he will also hold back for fear of killing. Ryner HATES killing above all else.
Ryner is LAZY. The first cause of this is his constant desire to sleep. This was caused by sleep deprivation during his time in the military. He holds onto it as a sort of habit and a way to escape the troubles of the world. Amnesiac Ryner is not as bad but isn't an initiator either. He would rather let others do it because they're probably better at it. Except for...
All Alpha Stigma bearers are driven to seek balance amid their world. They need to analyze, to understand how all things work in order to achieve this balance. Thus, Ryner habitually analyzes and works to understand things. This makes him insanely perceptive, especially with people and emotions. Very rarely does anyone need to explain anything to Ryner when it comes to how they feel, especially if they are hiding it. It also makes him SMART. Like Lelouch smart. The difference is Ryner lacks Lelouch's arrogance and info-modding style; he only wants to understand for the sake of this balance and to help others. In canon, he keeps his intelligence fairly low-key because he doesn't want to draw any unnecessary attention to himself (for fear of being revealed as an Alpha Stigma bearer). Amnesiac Ryner will be much more open about this intelligence at first because he doesn't have a reason to hide it. Expect that to change with memories received.
I thiiiink those are the main points, but I will add in more if they come up.
