I cannot stress enough how much this fucks up Ryner's entire perspective of himself and is VERY HARD to convince him otherwise. He already has proof of what people do to those around him.
So no it's not active disinterest, just pure and simple fear of hurting the people he cares about. It's easier on them to just... not talk about it. Ferris gets further only because she's slightly pushier, but Sion also gets his reactions when he pushes enough. >>;;
