Ryner miiiiiiiiight be a little more aware of feelings in Aather than he is in canon because of both more people making him think about it and Ferris' own actions. So while he is still TERRIFIED at the idea of love, he can't deny he does feeling something for Ferris. Which is what was behind his wanting Ferris to know that he wasn't just kissing her for the quest and that he wanted her to understand how much he appreciates everything she does for him. It was kind of a "I know I suck. I'm sorry. :(" deal. Also, he really hates the idea of burdening her, which was also behind his messing with stuff that appeared to be a burden in her heart. HE STILL FEELS AWFUL ABOUT THIS.

That said, he continues to have more faith in Sion than she since Sion realized his dream and, from what it sounds like, lost himself in the process. So he refuses to let himself doubt Sion for one second, even though the ugly stuff does wear on him. And while solving the Roland/Nelpha problem through memories remains super important to him, it is not actually playing a major role in his reluctance toward a relationship. That is still primarily his refusal to let himself have nice things for fear of them getting KILLED because of him. This is because the Sion problem can really only be addressed through memories and when there are none to analyze, Ryner focuses on figuring out Aather and helping Sion. The in-between times, he tries to make others happy. :(

Ryner also genuinely just wants to spend more time with Ferris and very much views Tiger's Eye as his second home. He likes doing things for her that win smiles (of the less violence/teasing-promising kind) and she continues to be one of the few people that succeeds at pulling him out of his slumps since he hates being down around her.
